THE PURPOSE OF ALLAH'S DHIKR (REMEMBRANCE) IS THE PURIFICATION AND REFINEMENT OF THE SOUL
THE PURPOSE OF ALLAH'S DHIKR IS THE CLEANSING (TAZKIYAH) AND PURIFICATION (TASFIYAH) OF THE SOUL."
As we mentioned before, the human being is created with three bodies: the physical body, the soul and the spirit.
There are 19 vices in the design of the soul: hatred and grudge, disbelief, lying, oppression, envy, ignorance, stinginess, anger and rage, rebellion, impatience, arrogance and pride, greed and lust, ingratitude, gossip, suspicion, addictions, disloyalty, hypocrisy, temptation and mischief-making. The soul never wants to fulfill Allah's commands; it persistantly wants to commit the acts He has forbidden.
Our spirit, on the other hand, is perfect the moment it is blown into us; it fulfills all of Allah's commands and never commits the acts forbidden by Him. It has 19 virtues: Love, faith, trustworthiness, justice, modesty, knowledge, generosity, tranquility, obedience, patience, humility, contentment, gratitude, secrecy, truth, virtues, loyalty, ikhlâs (sincerity), unity (tawhid).
At any moment, two conflicting demands from these two opposing siblings reach us simultaneously:
The spirit demands good, while the soul demands evil.
Here is where the problem starts; there is a constant war in our inner world. Where there is war and conflict, happiness does not occur.
Everything that brings us distress, cause us stand ashamed before our Lord, and leads us into conflict with others is due to the vices of the soul. Iblîs’s rebellion against Allah’s command came from the affliction of pride. Our father Adam and his wife were sent down from paradise to earth because of greed. Cain's killing of Abel was because of envy. If you have vices in your soul, every event makes you unhappy.
Do you want to be happy? If so, know that only one wish can make you happy: the wish to reach Allah, that is, the wish to deliver and surrender your spirit to Allah. This wish that you will express from your heart will enable Allah to bring you to your Religious Guide (murshid). These two opposite siblings may live inside you until the day you repent before your guide (murshid). With your repentance, the cleansing (tazkiyah) of the soul begins, and as your soul is cleansed, Allah will lead you to eternal happiness.
Happiness is an institution of acquiring qualities. Through the lights (nûr) that fill the heart of your soul, you will become such a person that negative factors will no longer affect you. You will be equipped with an armor against all the negativities of Satan. You will become such a person that you will spread goodness to everyone around you, acting only in ways that bring them happiness—and you will experience that the happiness you spread returns back to you.
